Located: Orange County High School Library, Orange, VA
Funding: OCHS Library Dept.
Details: Orange County High School is located in rural Virginia, tucked among horse country and wine country, the scenery is breathtaking. The school’s Library is becoming a multi-media center with Faith Olen at the helm. An unyielding go-getter, Mrs. Olen enlisted the services of Susan Krieg, Artist and Mural Painter, to fill the walls with images on the subject of communication. Historical references, cultural contributions, innovative methods of communication, satire and many artistic styles were used to tell the story of mankind’s evolution through communication. Working with 70 students and the school’s art instructor, Mr. Lee Nixon, the project took about 6 weeks to complete. The above image is titled 'Pop Art Phones'. It is 4' high by 8' wide, acrylic on plaster. Susan used this image for her autograph, which is her face in the lower right hand corner cell phone.

Susan Krieg designed one large image, using a 15th century German painting as the foundation. The German painting is titled 'The Garden of Eden' and represents the dark ages. All of the elements of the German painting have been replaced with various communication symbols and symbolic references from the history of art. For greater detail visit Susan's blog.
This tongue in cheek rendition of Alexander Graham Bell may explain how he came upon his invention of the telephone. Susan imagined him using a can and a string to talk with his wife.
Hands are extremely important when it comes to communication.
